The problem, in plain English

Replacing a hot water system is one of those purchases nobody plans for. The old one fails, and suddenly you are making a decision about a piece of equipment you will live with for the next decade, usually in a hurry and usually with a cold shower already behind you.

The choices are not obvious either. Gas or electric, storage or continuous flow, what size, which brand, and whether the quote you have been given is fair. Most people have no way to sanity check any of it, which is exactly why the first quote often feels uncomfortably high.

There is a sizing trap on top of that. Too small and you run out of hot water every evening. Too large and you pay for the unit and then keep paying to heat water nobody uses. Getting it wrong is expensive in both directions and you do not find out for weeks.

How DK Plumbing fixes it

DK Plumbing supplies and installs gas and electric hot water systems, storage and continuous flow, across the Redlands and Brisbane bayside. We hold a plumbing licence, a drainage licence and Gas Licence L91032, so both the water and the gas side of a changeover are done by the same person on the same day.

We size the system to how your household actually uses hot water rather than to a chart, and we are straight about the trade offs between gas, electric, storage and continuous flow for your specific property. If there is no gas at the place, we will say what going gas would really involve.

You are welcome to buy your own unit and have us install it. Either way the old system is removed and disposed of, the new one is installed to current standards, and you get an upfront price before we start and the compliance paperwork on the day.

Storage or continuous flow, gas or electric

Storage systems heat a tank and hold it ready, which is simple and reliable, but the tank is a finite amount of hot water and it is a fixed size once installed. Continuous flow heats on demand, so it does not run out and takes up far less room, but it needs adequate gas supply and the flow rate matters. Electric storage suits properties with no gas connection and can run on a cheaper controlled load tariff, at the cost of slower recovery. Gas recovers faster and is usually cheaper to run where gas is already connected. There is no single right answer, which is why we ask about your household before recommending rather than after.

What a replacement actually involves

We isolate and drain the old unit, disconnect it, and remove it from site. On gas systems the existing line is checked and, where the new unit differs, resized or extended, then capped and pressure tested as required. The new system is set level and secure, connected with new isolation valves and a compliant relief line, and where the installation needs one, a tempering valve is fitted so the delivered temperature is safe. Then it is filled, purged, tested and checked for leaks before we leave. The compliance paperwork is handed over on the day, which is what your insurer and the manufacturer warranty both rely on.

Why act now

  • We size the system to how your household uses hot water, not to a chart.
  • Happy to install a unit you have already bought, or supply and install the lot.
  • Old system removed and disposed of, compliance paperwork on the day.

Common questions

What size hot water system do I need?

It comes down to how many people are in the house and when they use hot water, not just bedroom count. A household that showers back to back in the morning needs more storage than the same number of people spread across the day. We size it on how you actually live rather than a chart, and we would rather ask a few questions than sell you a bigger unit than you need.

Can I supply my own unit and have you install it?

Yes, and plenty of people do. We are happy to install a unit you have bought. We will tell you before we start if what you have bought is a poor fit for the space or the connections, because that is better said beforehand than discovered halfway through.

Do you take the old system away?

Yes. The old unit is disconnected, drained, removed and disposed of as part of the job. On a gas unit the line is capped and tested properly, which is licensed work in its own right.

Should I switch from electric to gas, or the other way?

It depends on what is already at the property. If there is no gas connection, going gas means a new line and possibly a meter, which changes the maths considerably. If gas is already there, a continuous flow unit is worth considering because it does not run out. We will give you the honest comparison for your place rather than a general rule.

How long does a replacement take?

A like for like swap in the same position is usually a few hours. Moving the unit, changing between gas and electric, or upgrading to a larger size that needs different connections takes longer. We tell you which yours is when we quote rather than on the day.

Why locals call Dave
