The problem, in plain English

Gas hot water sits awkwardly between two trades. The water connections are plumbing, the gas connection is licensed gas work, and plenty of plumbers do not hold a gas licence. That turns a straightforward changeover into two bookings, two lots of waiting around, and each trade pointing at the other when something is not quite right.

It also means gas hot water faults get misdiagnosed. A unit that will not fire could be the ignition, the thermocouple, or the gas supply upstream of it entirely, and someone without a gas licence cannot properly check the last one. The result is a repair that does not hold.

On top of that, gas supply is easy to overlook when upgrading. A continuous flow unit draws considerably more than the old storage tank it replaces, and a line sized years ago for one appliance does not always carry it. The symptom is a unit that underperforms whenever the cooktop or heater is running.

How DK Plumbing fixes it

DK Plumbing holds a plumbing licence, a drainage licence and Gas Licence L91032, so gas hot water is one visit rather than two trades. Repairs, replacements and new installations, storage and continuous flow.

Because we are licensed for both, we check the whole system rather than just the unit. That includes the gas supply and line sizing, which is the part most often missed when a storage tank is replaced with a continuous flow system that draws more.

Every job is completed to current Australian gas standards, pressure tested before we leave, and handed over with the compliance paperwork your insurer and your appliance warranty rely on. Upfront price before we start.

Gas hot water work we handle

Repairs to gas storage and continuous flow systems, including ignition and pilot faults, thermocouples, burners, relief valves and tempering valves. Full system replacements, both like for like and upgrades from storage to continuous flow. New installations where there was no gas hot water before. Conversions from electric to gas where the property already has a gas connection. Gas line resizing and extension when the new unit draws more than the old one. And the related gas work that comes with it, including capping off correctly when an old unit is removed.

Why line sizing matters on a continuous flow upgrade

This is the most common thing missed on a gas hot water upgrade. A storage tank heats slowly and draws modestly. A continuous flow unit heats water instantly and draws considerably more gas while it is running. Put one on a line that was sized years ago for a cooktop and an old storage tank, and it will work fine on its own but drop off whenever something else is running. The giveaway is hot water that goes lukewarm the moment the heater or the cooktop is on. We calculate the combined load for everything on the run before quoting, which occasionally means recommending a larger line than expected, and saying so before the job rather than after.

Why act now

  • Gas hot water stopped? Most causes are the ignition, thermocouple or supply, not the tank.
  • One licensed tradesman for the water and the gas side. One visit, one price.
  • Upgrading to continuous flow? The gas line has to carry the higher draw.
  • Every job pressure tested and left with compliance paperwork. Gas Licence L91032.

Common questions

My gas hot water has stopped working. What is the usual cause?

Most often it is the pilot or ignition, a failed thermocouple, or the gas supply to the unit rather than the unit itself. On continuous flow systems it can also be water flow dropping below the rate needed to fire the burner. All of those are diagnosable on site and most are repairs rather than replacements.

Do I need a gas fitter or a plumber for gas hot water?

Both, which is the awkward part. The water connections are plumbing and the gas connection is licensed gas work. We hold both, including Gas Licence L91032, so a changeover is one visit and one price rather than two trades and two bookings.

Is continuous flow better than a gas storage tank?

It depends on the household. Continuous flow does not run out and takes up much less space, which suits families who shower back to back. It does need adequate gas supply, so on a line already carrying a cooktop and a heater it sometimes means upsizing the run. Gas storage is simpler and recovers quickly. We will tell you which suits your place and your existing gas line.

Can you convert my electric system to gas?

Where there is already a gas connection at the property, yes. If there is not, it means a new line and possibly a meter, which changes the cost considerably. We will price the whole picture honestly rather than just the unit, so you can decide with the real number in front of you.

Do I get compliance paperwork?

Yes. Every gas job is pressure tested and handed over with the compliance certification you need for your records, your insurer and your appliance warranty.
